The Wessex Regionalists condemn the proposed closures of four community hospitals in South Devon and feel these measures are both short-sighted and cruel. We believe it is yet another act of an ideologically austerity driven Tory government at Westminster and one which fails to recognise the needs of local communities in the area.
The Wessex Regionalists are a party which believes firmly in community values and services. The removal of hospitals in Paignton, Bovey Tracey, Ashburton and Dartmouth will not lead to better health care or facilities and is simply part of an aggressive and regressive path being trodden by health authorities tied to the budgets of top down diktat from central government.
As a party, the Wessex Regionalists support those trying to prevent hospital closures and cuts to NHS services in South Devon and across the region. But beyond this we call for an end to top down diktat from Westminster, and for it to be replaced it with genuine grassroots democracy where communities have a real voice and where local services are adequately funded and not put beneath tax cuts for the wealthiest and costly military campaigns and weapons of mass destruction.
Local activist, Rick Heyse, described the closures as something which 'Makes no practical sense'. He added 'We live in an increasingly ageing society in an area which attracts many people who have retired. If anything we need investment in community health care and facilities, not cuts'.
